'Julyamsh' back in the Inland Northwest after two-year hiatus

KOOTENAI COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS, Idaho – After a two-year hiatus the region’s largest outdoor powwow will be back in the Inland Northwest this weekend. Julyamsh is making a comeback after gaming conflicts forced the tribal gathering to find a new venue. The event is put on by the Coeur d’Alene Casino and will be held at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds from Friday until Monday, July 24. Julyamsh, or powwows, are a Native American tradition. They are celebrations usually accompanied with dance competitions, surrounded by traditions and beliefs sacred to Native Americans. The event had a 17-year run at the Greyhound Park Event Center, but the relationship between the center and the casino was severed due to gaming conflicts over “instant betting” machines. Participants have moved past that and are looking forward to this year’s event. After finding a new location at the Fairgrounds, participants said the space is even more fitting for the powwow. They said when they found out the Fairgrounds was available; it was a sign.

Sometimes, our homes can overwhelm us. What should be a place of retreat and comfort becomes bloated with items not needed, styles experimented with and abandoned, and projects started but never completed. While a good Spring Clean (whenever it happens) is always welcome, sometimes you want to go even further than that and streamline your style, too. Read on for our Minimalist Manifesto, and for ideas on how to simplify your home.

Plans for a sports complex and a neighborhood park will move forward in Post Falls thanks to a deal between the city and a developer. The agreement between the city and Copper Basin Construction will allow for a future 25-acre, multi-use sports complex on the north end of the Tullamore subdivision on the south side of Prairie Avenue and an 8.3-acre neighborhood park in the development west of Highway 41. "It's a win-win for the development, the developer and the city," said Dave Fair, Post Falls parks and recreation director.

New Idaho law targets stalkers

Stalking victims now have a more immediate way to get a restraining order without dealing with the criminal justice system. A new code section in Idaho Law, I.C. § 18-7907, allows victims of stalking, malicious harassment and telephone harassment to apply for a civil order of protection. Before the bill became active July 1, victims of stalking had to wait for police to conduct criminal investigations and for prosecutors to decide whether or not to prosecute the alleged perpetrator. The alleged victim would also have to prove, beyond reasonable doubt, that the stalking or malicious harassment happened.

Foreign buyers flood US real estate, but buy cheaper homes

The appetite for U.S. real estate continues to flourish, but international buyers are shifting their sights from luxury to less-pricey properties. This may be due to overall higher home prices, along with a stronger U.S. dollar, which both cost foreign buyers more at the negotiating table. There are also fewer nonresident foreigners investing in the market.

Jobs Plus connects dots with education

For the wheels of economic development to turn, education has to be a cog. Recent developments in local education were among the success stories celebrated Thursday during the Jobs Plus annual meeting attended by about 300 at The Coeur d'Alene Resort. "One of the key components (to recruiting and expanding businesses) is a well-educated, well-trained and ready workforce," said Gynii Gilliam, president of the Coeur d'Alene area economic development corporation. Gilliam said it's going to take government, colleges, the K-12 school system and businesses working together to overcome the challenges of creating and retaining such a workforce and "connect the dots" of economic development, which has been a Jobs Plus theme over the past year.

Thanks, Brexit! Why UK vote is likely to boost US home sales

The net effect will depend on location and price point, but overall, the Brexit will likely result in continuing growth in home sales with somewhat slower growth in home prices. The impact will benefit well-qualified buyers the most, and it will be a boon for sellers in affordable markets and price points.
